Christos Theofilis is a Greek visual artist born in 1956 in Piraeus, Greece. He initially attempted to study at the Athens School of Fine Arts in 1973 but was unsuccessful, leading him to pursue engineering at the Onassis School for the Merchant Navy, where he worked until 1979. Despite this detour, Theofilis continued his interest in art throughout his seafaring career, even as he discovered he suffered from a form of colorblindness that prevented him from distinguishing low semi-tones. This condition fueled his desire to master painting.

His artistic talent was recognized when he was among ten artists awarded by the European Economic Community in 1982 at an exhibition in Athens. Theofilis' work is characterized by an ideology that art should derive its energy solely from the artist's inner truth, which he maintained without succumbing to commercial pressures, yet his work remained desirable to buyers without negotiation.

During the 1980s, Theofilis became one of Greece's most sought-after artists. Between 1978 and 1985, he co-ran an art space with , which was a significant venue for many distinguished Greek artists of the time. Despite an invitation from Alexander Iolas to move to New York in 1984, Theofilis chose to stay in Greece, valuing his artistic independence.

Theofilis has an extensive exhibition record, having presented over 160 personal exhibitions. Notable exhibitions include "Epithanatios Synthesi" at Ora Cultural Center in Athens in 1981, "The Moon" at To Trito Mati Gallery in 1989, and "The Portrait of Dorian Gray" at Ekfrasi - Yianna Grammatopoulou in 2007. His art has been described as embodying various forms of plasticity and expression, with art historian Costas Stavropoulos praising him as a "snatcher of the visual gaze."

In 2000, Theofilis founded the ART-ACT Institute for Contemporary Arts and Letters, and in 2007, he established the ART-ACT Institute of Art. He has worked as an art critic and curator, contributing regularly to several Greek newspapers like "Avgi" and "O Chronos," and has supervised numerous art publications and exhibitions.

His work is also noted for its cultural and historical references, particularly in relation to Greek folklore and shadow theater, as seen in his publications and collaborations on books like "Shadow Theater: Two-Drachma Editions" and "Homage to Oscar Wild: Icono-Graphy of a Portrait."

Christos Theofilis' career reflects a commitment to his personal artistic vision over commercial success, and his biography illustrates a journey from a self-taught artist overcoming personal challenges to becoming a significant figure in modern Greek art.
